Hi, I’m Maura Porter.
I am a Certified Canine Behavior Consultant and Trainer with well over a decade of professional experience working with dogs across shelters, rescues, training facilities, and private homes. My work is rooted in science-based, force-free behavior modification, with a strong focus on helping dogs who are fearful, reactive, anxious, or struggling to succeed in traditional environments.
I earned my Certified Canine Behavior Consultant credential through the International School for Canine Psychology and Behavior, completing advanced coursework in canine behavior modification from 2023–2025. Earlier in my career, I completed a two-year, hands-on dog training program at Mount Ida College, where I became a Certified Dog Trainer and developed a strong foundation in learning theory, training mechanics, and real-world application. In 2014, I became a CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed). A CCPDT certification demonstrates a trainer's knowledge through a challenging multiple-choice exam, requiring 300+ hours of experience.
Since 2011, I have owned and operated Clear Skies Dog Training & Evaluation, LLC, providing individualized training and behavior support for dogs and their families throughout Massachusetts. My approach emphasizes humane, positive reinforcement methods, thoughtful management strategies, and realistic expectations tailored to each dog and household.
In addition to private practice, I currently serve as Canine Manager and Trainer at Quincy Animal Shelter, where I coordinate behavior and training plans for shelter dogs, particularly those whose behavioral challenges may delay adoption. I work closely with staff and volunteers to implement behavior modification protocols, support foster placements, and guide adoption meet-and-greets for more complex cases. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I oversaw the shelter’s foster program, ensuring dogs received appropriate support during a critical period of transition.
I am also a long-standing evaluator for Dog B.O.N.E.S. Therapy Dogs of Massachusetts, where I assess dogs and handlers for therapy dog certification, and a Rescue Volunteer with The Humane Society of the United States, deploying when and where canine support is needed.
My work extends to education and mentorship as well. I teach group classes—including Puppy Manners, Basic Obedience, Dog Reactivity, and enrichment-based activities—at the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts. I also serve as a Mentor Trainer with CATCH Canine Trainers Academy, supporting and guiding aspiring trainers in modern, science-based, positive reinforcement practices.
At the core of my work is a deep respect for dogs as individuals. I believe behavior is communication, not being “bad” or “mad”, and that meaningful progress comes from understanding the why behind a dog’s actions. My goal is to help dogs feel more confident in their world—and to empower the humans who love them with the skills and confidence to support lasting change.
